Participants in this webinar will come away with a better understanding of the impact of workplace violence, a toolbox of practical safety strategies, and an increased knowledge of how to reduce employer liability and cost, while enhancing the security and productivity of their entire workforce.

WHY SHOULD YOU ATTEND

Over 2 million incidents of workplace violence are reported annually in America, with over 400 on-the-job homicides per year. In 2015, over 16,000 employees reported being assaulted by a co-worker, but many occurrences of workplace violence are due to outside sources such as former employees, robbers, intimate partners of workers, or even ideological terrorists. Beyond the typical reasons for workplace violence, researchers are now beginning to see the emergence of “hybrid violence” in which traditional motives such as pre-existing workplace grievances combine with causes such as domestic abuse or religious and political extremism. In order to defend against workplace violence, employers must shift from a reactive to a proactive stance, anticipating risk before it arrives as tragedy. Developing a workplace violence prevention and response plan can help employers to decrease the potential for injuries and loss of life, while also reducing the directly and indirectly associated costs that it brings. Most corporate security directors agree that workplace violence is among their highest concerns for employee safety. However, those who fail to act by confronting the danger head on, risk potential physical and economic casualties by leaving themselves open to violent attacks, increased absenteeism and turnover, reduced employee productivity and morale, employee performance issues, and possible regulatory violations, as well as legal liabilities.

AREAS COVERED

This unique 90 minute workplace violence prevention training facilitated by experienced trainer Lynn Fairweather, begins with an exploration of the issue of workplace violence in America by examining definitions and prevalence rates, the five main categories of workplace violence, and the particular risks that various industries and employees may face. Next, the training turns to the careful, holistic assessment of workplace violence risk by revealing the employee perpetrator risk factors and behavioural warning signs that may accompany impending attacks. Participants will learn about utilizing workplace violence safety tips and highly validated workplace violence assessment tools, and uncover the basic principles of threat assessment and management that will assist them with evaluating and handling workplace violence cases. Content includes education on the Path to Intended Violence, situational analysis, questions to ask about individual employee cases, and how to develop a dependable, in-house, multidisciplinary workplace violence prevention program. Next, attendees will learn how to build strong and comprehensive workplace violence prevention and response policies, and explore the essential elements of employee training and awareness at all levels, including a crucial training concept called “The 3 R’s” (Recognize, Respond and Refer). Finally, the last third of the presentation will focus on the foundations of employer liability, featuring information on OSHA violations, negligent hiring, training, retention, and supervision lawsuits and wrongful death claims. Participants will discover in depth legal concepts of Employer Liability Act, Doctrine of Vicarious Liability, Special Relationships, and Failure to Exercise Ordinary Care. The session concludes with a selection of workplace violence prevention tips, ideas for individual employee safety planning, and additional resources that can provide further information on the prevention of workplace violence. Overall, attendees of this training will gain knowledge, confidence, and insight into the prevention of workplace violence, as well as the creation of a secure and smoothly functioning business model.
