Integrating Photograph, Photovoice and Videos in research

Introduction

Learning and dissemination of information can be done by reading, listening and having experiences. The best way for most people is often a combination of these methodologies together with photography. Using photography as a storytelling method helps in opening a dialogue between beneficiaries and/or stakeholders, creating a (safe) space for them to express themselves and reflect on issues related to project implementation. This 5- days training provides both theoretical knowledge and practical experience in the use of photography, photovoice and Videos. Photovoice can be used for a wide range of purposes, including Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E), advocacy, research and community based activities, as well as marketing purposes. Photos can also be incorporated in other research outputs such as case studies, evidence briefs and project reports to increase on credibility of the information.

 

Who should attend?

NGO staff, researchers in agricultural sector, Monitoring and Evaluation, Health, photographers, marketers, educators, community health and social workers, visual artists and anyone who is looking for new and creative ways to gain insight and understanding into people's lived experiences and concerns.

 

Objectives

By the end of the training, the participants will be equipped with knowledge and skills in:

· Participatory photography

· How to set up and design your own Photovoice project

· The different uses and benefits of Photovoice (e.g. in M&E and advocacy)

· How to write a case study and evidence briefs

Module 1: Photography

· Photography techniques and processing with software such as Photoshop

· Rules of photography

 

Module 2: Video shooting

· Introduction to digital video as means of sharing experience

· Basic camera techniques and filming practical

· Video shooting

· Video editing

· Presenting videos and feedback

 

Module 3: Photo voice

· Introduction to photo voice (4WH)

· Putting together a photo voice project

· Photo voice in the programme cycle

· Planning and design

· Delivering and facilitating photo voice

 

Module 4: Writing a case study

· What a case study is

· Outline of a case study

· Advantages and limitations of a case study

· Process for conducting a case study

· Where to use case study

· Steps for telling your story

· Protocols for using and adapting quotations

· Presentation of case study

· Adapting briefings and feedback process to generate new stories

Module 5: Writing an evidence brief and a blog
