Introduction
We will introduce methods to perform systematic reviews and meta-analysis of clinical trials. We will cover how to formulate an answerable research question, define inclusion and exclusion criteria, search for the evidence, extract data, assess the risk of bias in clinical trials, and perform a meta-analysis.
The course is made up of informal lectures, group work, and a computer practical and encompasses the production process of a systematic review from start (review question and protocol) to finish (reporting, dissemination, and critical appraisal). We strive to produce interactive, informative sessions that deliver the most up-to-date knowledge and methods from the field of systematic reviews and meta-analysis.
Course Objectives
Upon successfully completing this course, participants will be able to:
o Describe the steps in conducting a systematic review Develop an answerable question using the “Participants Interventions Comparisons Outcomes” (PICO) framework
o Describe the process used to collect and extract data from reports of clinical trials
o Describe methods to critically assess the risk of bias of clinical trials - Describe and interpret the results of meta-analyses

Module 1: Sources of information for systematic review
o Identifying the search engine to sources the intended information (e.g use of web of science, scopus, specified websites etc)
o Identifying key words and terms to search based on the study
o How to used end notes to record identified references?
o Review of documents and categorize them based on subject matter being studied
Module 2: Literature Review
o Identifying different sources of literature to review
o Theoretical versus empirical literature
o Purpose of literature review
o Ingredients of a good literature review
o Assessing value of literature and critical review of literature
o Citation of literature review (why, what, when)
o Avoiding plagiarism
o How to document literature review?
o Use of a referencing software e.g medley
Module 3: Writing up a report covering the approach and findings.
o Content of each section of a report
o Executive summary

Training Approach
