INTRODUCTION

The world today is more unpredictable and uncontrollable than ever before. Climate change and globalisation is the major drivers of this situation. People around the world are increasingly exposed to extreme weather events, economic crises, food crises, disease epidemics, social instability and political conflicts. This training course aims to offer a systems approach on agriculture with the delivery of skills and tools to design innovative, resilient and sustainable food systems. It looks at how to balance between producing food, managing natural resources, dealing with uncertainty and providing livelihood base for the rural population. It will also look at the role and involvement of public, private and civil stakeholders in developing and strengthening community-based livelihoods management and disaster preparedness and response mechanisms.

COURSE OBECTIVES

By the end of this training, learners will be able to:

  • Understand the concept of food security and risk reduction
  • Gain understanding of various threats to food and nutrition security
  • Understand how to improve household food production and consumption (dietary diversity) even at the middle of disaster.
  • Improve home-based livelihood opportunities for the rural poor.
  • Develop and strengthen community-based livelihoods management and disaster preparedness and response mechanisms
  • Understand various approaches and practices for building resilient livelihoods
  • Build enabling environment for resilient livelihoods

 

COURSE OUTLINE

Module 1: Threats to food and nutrition security

  • Natural hazards (drought, floods, tsunamis, hurricanes/typhoons, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, landslides)
  • Socio-economic crises (e.g. volatility in agricultural commodity markets and soaring food prices)
  • Environmental conditions such as land degradation, desertification and water scarcity
  • Climate change(increase in the frequency and intensity of weather-related hazards)
  • Food chain emergencies of trans boundary threats

 

Module 2: Effects of climate change and disaster risks on:

  • Agricultural productivity
  • Production stability
  • Farmers’ incomes

Disaster Risk Reduction for food and nutrition security

  • Critical roles of early warning systems
  • Risk detection, mitigation and prevention measures
  • Importance of mitigation and risk prevention measures
  • Importance of risk preparedness improved monitoring of emerging threats and communication to food nutrition security

Module 3: Approaches and practices for building resilient livelihoods

  • Postharvest Management
  • Livelihoods diversification
  • Crop diversification
  • Integrated pest management
  • Natural resource management

 

Module 4: Field trip

Module 5: Enabling environment for resilient livelihoods

  • Legal policy framework
  • Institutional structures and coordination
  • Capacity development and local support
