- OVERVIEW -

This Summit will provide participants with a snapshot of the evolution, current status, and projected future of R&D and Product Development Metrics as viewed from the top of corporations.

During the first two seminars of the Summit, we will teach the Body of Knowledge of R&D and Product Development Metrics -- with a focus towards the measures that company Officers and Senior Executives need to manage the organization and its performance as a whole. The first one-day seminar is dedicated to focus on the metrics for decisions and issues that Officers and Senior Executives face in directing and measuring overall performance and entire organizations. The three most adopted industry metrics of the past decade will be discussed, along with a number of other all-in-one metrics: 3M's "Vitality Index," the emergent "Return On Innovation" metric, and the rejuvenated "Return On Capital." Capacity, pipeline and portfolio management, hurdle rates, risk, and trade-off analysis discussions round out the first day. The second seminar, a half-day concluding with an early afternoon luncheon, is dedicated to "proactive" and "predictive" metrics. Proactive metrics lower the risk of R&D investments before they are approved. Predictive metrics improve the ability to foresee the execution and financial outcomes of approved investments.

During the third and final seminar of the Summit, participants will break into working groups to create a "set of metrics" suitable for managing and monitoring R&D and/or Product Development organizations as a whole -- including Projects, Technical & Functional Disciplines, Improvement Initiatives, and the overall Corporate Performance of R&D. Applied Research and Advanced Development organizations are easily accommodated as well in a single integrated framework, for companies with multiple development organizations. The Linked Metrics Portfolio® approach, preferred to the Balanced Scorecard for managing R&D and Product Development, will frame the exercise.

Senior executives wishing to put themselves and their fellow senior executives in a better position to direct and drive product creation and commercialization should strongly consider attending. Several of our prior participants have said, "this Summit covers everything an Officer or Senior Manager needs to know on the subject of Metrics." GGI, a 28-year old company, has been recognized as a thought leader and practitioner in this field since the early 1990s.

Finally, and this is not true of all GGI Metrics Summits, on Janaury 01, 2022 GGI published our 6th North American study of R&D and Product Development practices in the areas of R&D Operating Environments, Organic Innovation, Open Innovation, Intellectual Property, and the Top Corporate R&D Metrics In Use. Two-hundred companies from the USA, Canada, and Mexico participated in numbers that represent the relative R&D spending of the North American countries. It will be difficult to find information that is more current to augment the practical nature and usable outcomes of this Summit.

- ANNOUNCEMENT -

The ability of officers, managers, and key professionals to direct and make their organizations productive through metrics and measures is the focus of the 18th R&D-Product Development Metrics Summit held in December 9-11, 2014 in metro Boston.

The Metrics Summit is a series of 3 seminars, focused on 3 major areas of importance to R&D executives and managers.  A four page Brochure and the Table of Contents of each of the three seminar Coursebooks may be downloaded from the Summit website.

- The First Two Seminars -

The first seminar [Measuring Product Development II (MPDII) - December 9] is focused on the issues that top management has to deal with based largely on judgement and are often hard to quantify. The topics span the subjects of setting hurdle rates, assessing risk and complexity, tradeoff analysis, measuring capacity, and assessing overall financial performance.

The second seminar [Proactive and Predictive R&D Metrics (PPRD) - December 10 AM] is focused on the three different stages of developing early, predictive metrics that will enable managers to foresee issues on the horizon or to know that success is in front of them. GGI was the first company to differentiate proactive from predictive metrics in the 1990s which then spawned further exploration of that management science.

- The Third Seminar-Workshop -

The third seminar, is more accurately a Workshop [Product Development Metrics Portfolios (PDMP) - December 10 PM and December 11]. From start to completion, participants work in groups to develop "a set of measures suitable for measuring the entire organization and the activities within it." The Coursebook for the Workshop is a reference compendium of hundreds of measures for R&D organizations spanning most categories of measures. It contains metrics for Advanced Development, Intellectual Property, and Functional/Technical/Productivity.

The scorecard each group will create will contain a comprehensive set of measures for the R&D organization as a whole at the top officer level. This portfolio of metrics will be suitable to pass the necessary metrics to the CEO that are needed by the corporation. This portfolio of metrics will be suitable to consistently measure projects, and the functional and technical organizations that perform the projects. Improvement measures will also be addressed.

The US Patent & Trademark Office granted a trademark to GGI in January 2007 for our Linked Metrics Portfolio® framework which is used during the Workshop.  Our lean practical framework results in a set of metrics that span 4-6 organization levels while remaining integrated.

- Who Should Come -

Our overall approach to the Summit is geared to top-level professionals that manage entire organizations, departments, adn budgets; and to senior program management executives. Numerous companies have brought teams of officers ranging from three to ten in size in the quest to develop a set of metrics they can all agree to for R&D and product development.

When one or two persons come from a company, they participate in multi-company groups based on industry type or the similarity of the corporate R&D strategies -- Innovators, Platform-Derivative, Extenders, etc. Individuals engage in some amazing discussions within their multi-company peer groups while agreeing the right metrics for their shared strategy or industry.  Company Team members make some big decisions and agree to agree on the specific metrics that are right for their company.

Please be assured. if you register for the entire Summit, that you will exit with a set of metrics suitable for measuring the R&D and Product Development organization as a whole.  The dashboard of metrics will be close to "implementation-ready" as you return to your company.  Each working group presents their results and shares their thinking to conclude the Summit.

Approximately half of our Summit attendees are nice enough to have given us written comments about their experiences the Summit.  A list of companies that have attended our Summit is also available. Both the List of Companies that have previously attended and Testimonials from prior Summit attendees are easily found on the Home page of our Summit website.

- Summit Faculty -

The Metrics Summit will be led by Bradford L. Goldense, NPDP, CMfgE, CPIM, CCP.  Mr. Goldense is a recognized expert on R&D metrics, product development, and corporate innovation.  Brad, John R. [Dick] Power, and Dr. Hans Ludi together will facilitate the Workshop.  Other members of the GGI team will be in support throughout the Summit.

- Registration Information -

We always offer significant discounts to companies that bring Company Teams of three or more people, $254 per person.  We also offer a series of early registration discounts that typically expire a few weeks before the Summit commences.

There is a registration option to attend just the first day and one-half of the three-day Summit, the first two Seminars.  But, we encourage participation in the entire Summit.
