In the health care sector pharmacists are considered as the backbone in many different settings. From recognizing the health problem of the public to developing medicines, policies and education to tackle them, pharmacists contribute to a great extent. From the very 1st stage, when the first molecule which treats the diseases effectively is identified, pharmacists are there.
Pharmacists are the drug experts. They are vital, professional in patient’s orientation, active members of the health care team, always committed to fulfill the health care needs of every individual by helping them to optimize the appropriate use of medication and related problems. So, for their massive contribution to the health care sector, World Pharmacists Day is celebrated.
During the council meeting of FIP Congress in Istanbul, turkey in 2009, the Turkish Pharmacists Association declared 25th September as World Pharmacists day every year.
The basic objective behind the celebration of this day is to raise the awareness among the people regarding to the appropriate use of medicines, preventive measures against diseases and the overall development in the health care sector. It is believed that pharmacist’s community is one the three main pillars of the healthcare sector apart from doctors and nurses being the other two pillars.
Every year the day is followed by a new theme and this year the theme for the day will be: “from research to health care: your pharmacist is at your service.”
According to FIP President, the theme reflects the various contribution of the pharmacy profession in the department of health. From the basic point of research to the development stage of medicines and further educating masses, future pharmacists and pharmaceutical scientists, all these reflect the importance of pharmacists in our daily lives.
Let’s take a step ahead to mark the contribution of pharmacists in the department of health care, all across the globe.
