This month will see a partnership between The Brixton Project and Brockwell Live to mark 75 years of
Black British history with a 400 metre artwork displayed on Brockwell Park's perimeter wall.
The collaborative artwork that has been created from more than 200 submissions from the local community,
including schools, cultural organisations and artists.

Due to be unveiled in an open-to-all event on 23rd May, this unique collaboration will feature five
themes - and Brixton’s central place in UK multiculturalism. Ancestry, Island Life, Building Britain,
Carnival and Future will examine the past, present and future in accessible and impactful ways,
transforming Brockwell Park for locals and festival-goers alike.

Over the past few weeks, applications have collected artwork from schools, community groups, cultural
organisations and artists by The Brixton Project from surrounding community groups and designed to
create a 400 metre installation. History, poetry, art and photography all collide in this not-to-be-missed
installation.

A spokesperson for The Brixton Project said, “Off The Fence will mark the contribution of the Windrush
generation and their descendants, 75 years after the Empire Windrush docked at Tilbury. As one of
London’s largest community-led art experiences, local schools, artists, community groups and cultural
organisations have all come together to recognise this event in Black British history.”

The artwork will be unveiled on 23rd May and will be visible until the 11th June. Organisations that have
submitted artwork include schools (Rosendale, Heron Academy, Loughborough Primary School, Richard
Atkins, St Gabriels, Streatham Wells); organisations (Oxygen Arts, West Indian Association of Service
Personnel, Brixton Immortals Dominoes Club, Sunshine International Arts, Black Cultural Archives, Poetic
Unity); and artists (Azarra Amoy, Carolyne Hill, The late Jon Daniel: Afro Supa Hero).
