AWA Band (Live) - Band on stage from around 3pm, performing 2 live sets
Awa band’s new release is a single track of Afro / Latin sounds, drawing influences from the original Afro Beat style and Latin Samba, tapping into Yoruba folkloric call and response.
Green samba was originally written by Barbara Snow over 10 years ago, but was discovered recently while looking through her drafts of song ideas. It’s Inspired by the Horace Silver track ‘Cape Verdean Blues’, which she used to play in a tribute band called Sister Sadie.
It’s an instantly catchy tune with a beautiful melodic structure in samba style. The song has now been recorded live in Lagos in the style of afro beat, mixing high life with juju guitar chords, to give it an afro Latin vibe, with the addition of a Yoruba chorus.
Barbara Snow has played in a mixture of genres. She has recorded with dance music producers Full Intention, pop band Style Council. She has also played with legendary afro beat drummer Tony Allen amongst many others. Fellow Awa Band member Kayode Samuel has also worked with Full Intention and Tony Allen, along with Damon Albarn and Egypt 80 band (Fela Kuti).
A remix version of Green Samba has been released by Native Music and remixed by Mijango, and was picked at number two in the Afro-Latin/Brazilian Traxsource’s top 200 best tracks of the year 2022. This is a summer feel-good track filled with vibrant sounds that you can dance to or just enjoy. Awa Band will be performing live throughout the summer.
