We are continuing our practice of engaging talented young instrumentalists from our local area to be our featured soloist. Matt Kenny from Watford will be performing Haydn's well known Trumpet Concerto in E flat major. Having graduated from The Royal Northern College of Music, he is now embarking on a career as an orchestral and solo trumpeter.

The evening starts with Beethoven's Overture 'Coriolan', a dark and dramatic evocation inspired by Shakespeare's play, the tragedy 'Coriolanus'.

The concert ends with Beethoven's monumental Symphony No. 3 in E flat major 'Eroica'. A firm favourite of any Beethoven enthusiast. This symphony has long been acknowledged as marking the transition of the Classical musical language of the 18th and early 19th century into the Romantic period of that century. The symphony's title page 'Eroica' itself was not entirely as Beethoven intended. It was originally to be clearly dedicated to Napoleon Bonaparte, but upon hearing that Napoleon had just declared himself Emperor of France, he furiously tore out the dedication page, stating that in this act, he had proved himself to be no better than ordinary people, in this self-serving decision. The composition instead became 'In memory of a great man' prefacing its new dedicatee Prince Lobkowitz, a patron of Beethoven. As you hear the opening two chords of this symphony, such a statement of intent leaves the listener in no doubt that what follows is no ordinary symphony.

We do hope to see you at our concert, which promises to be a most enjoyable event. Our usual refreshments of wine and soft drinks will be available during the interval, plus a raffle with some worthwhile prizes.

The concert, conducted by Stuart Dunlop, is led by local violinist Rebecca Boyle. Tickets are priced at £18 each. Tickets can be purchased online from www.ticketsource.co.uk/watford-symphony-orchestra or via our website Watfordsymphonyorchestra.co.uk or by email to [email protected].
