Volcanic Wines! [March 13]

There are trends and fads in wine, like in any other consumer trade. And one of those trends has been the fascination with wines from volcanic soils. The places themselves seem very dramatic and the idea of something like a rich, delicious wine growing out of the smoking ash of earth’s fury is also dramatic. The wines of Mt. Etna or from the areas around Vesuvius are perhaps the most well known. But there are also other volcanic areas, such as parts of Oregon, Lake Garda near Verona, the Canary Islands and the Argentinian region of Mendoza.
Volcanic wines are necessarily grown on soils that have had time to rejuvenate themselves with organic matter.  Pure, new volcanic soils would be too poor to support even wine grapes, which require poor soils. But once some life has returned to these areas, they are ideal for wine grapes - they provide a natural incline that drains water and cold air and by making the vines struggle to produce grapes, they impart aromatic depth and vibrancy to the resulting wines. Join us as we discuss, and taste, these volcanic wines.

This class will be held Online through Zoom. Tasting Kits are available for pick up at our school if you select the Online with Tasting Kit registration option. For those who wish to purchase their own wines, lists will be provided ahead of time so that you may taste along at home.
