KAREN MEYER'S passion for history began as a young girl and led her to copy an early Ohio settler's diary in her senior year of high school. After earning a bachelor's degree cum laude in English and Education, she became an Air Force wife, and over the course of nine years lived in places as far away as Labrador. Seeing new lands gave Meyer a window on regional and national differences and confirmed an appreciation for her own Ohio roots where she and her husband settled and raised their family. She enjoys sharing her interest in history with young people and adults alike.

She's written seven historical fiction novels for young readers featuring famous Ohioans. Her books, Conflict at Chillicothe, Battle at Blue Licks, Missing at Marietta, and Whispers at Marietta bring the reader into the action for the pioneer period.

The Tiara Mystery gives readers a glimpse into young Orville Wright as he helps the protagonists solve a mystery.

North to Freedom showcases Ohio's Underground Railroad heroes as they help two runaways escape slave catchers on their way to Canada.

Simon Kenton, Unlikely Hero is a biography of an Ohioan who should be more famous. Illustrations and end-of-chapter questions make this a good introduction to young people's interest in Ohio's frontier history.

In her latest book, Choosing Sides, Karen showcases her hometown's explosive history. We meet Gilbert Freeman, a young man who at first helped Harry Corbin defy the temperance forces in the dry town of Westerville in 1875. When the vandalism escalates, Gilbert must examine his values. At stake is his fragile relationship with his father and his newfound friends, one of whom is a girl.
