There are significantly more visitors in both summer and winter than the Tanana Lakes Recreation Area facilities can currently support. The number of current visitors is more than double the 100,000 visitors the park was designed for in 2007.

The specific needs addressed by the project are:
1.    Indirect and lengthy route to the swim beach and boat launch. 
2.    Dust and maintenance problems with the existing gravel road.
3.    Undersized swim beach parking lot with minimal ADA accommodations. 
4.    Inadequate restroom facilities. 

The proposed project would:
•    Pave a new and shorter access route via South Lathrop Street.
•    Expand the swim beach parking lot.
•    Install ADA-compliant parking and access. 
•    Install vault restrooms at the swim beach and non-motorized boat launch.

Construction will begin in 2022 and end in 2023.
