The London Piano Quartet have spent their first official season as an ensemble exploring the three masterpieces for piano quartet by Johannes Brahms. To conclude their 2023 series at Conway Hall they present the final quartet in C minor, 'Werther', thus named in reference to Goethe's 1774 novel, The Sorrows of Young Werther.
Two early works complete the programme: Mendelssohn's F minor quartet, composed at the age of 14 and dedicated to Carl Friedrich Zelter, his music teacher; and Walton's quartet, composed when the composer was just 16 but already exhibited many of the characteristics of his more mature works.
