The Waynflete Singers return to the Cathedral for their ever-popular Christmas concert. They are joined by the English Chamber Orchestra, on this occasion with a timely double billing of works dedicated to St Nicholas.
Programme:
Joseph Haydn: Symphony No 30 "Alleluia"
Joseph Haydn: St Nicholas Mass (Missa Sancti Nicolai)
Benjamin Britten: St Nicolas Cantata
The concert will open with Haydn's Symphony No 30, nicked-named the 'Alleluia' Symphony, a vibrant and lively start to the proceedings . This will be followed by Haydn's St Nicholas Mass, a work of infectious joy and good cheer. The second half is dedicated Benjamin Britten's St Nicolas Cantata, a narration of the life of St Nicolas, Bishop of Myrna, and his good works - a spirited story complete with sea voyage, storm, saving the daughters of a poor man from a life of prostitution, and the resurrection of three pickled boys! A superb line-up of soloists, with Benjamin Hulett in the role of Saint Nicolas and three boy choristers will bring both works to life. All under the baton of Andrew Lumsden , director of the Waynflete Singers and the Cathedral Music Director.
