St Georges Open Day has so much to offer. Some of our artistisan tenants will be opening their studios, showing silver jewellery, woodwork and print making. Our community users Island Voices, will be entertaining us at 11am, and Platinum Dance School will be dancing at 1pm. Portland Museum and Portland Coastwatch will be giving information and insight into the important contribution that they give to the Island. Royal Manor Workshops will be doing a weaving demonstration. We are excited that the Study Centre which is based at the St Georges Centre has joined with B Side to research the tapestries which are displayed around the walls of the Girt Hall. These were gifted to us when the Portland Council Offices were closed. They were created in 1978 to celebrate 900 years of Portlands self government on the Island. Portland families were offered the opportunity to have their names on the tapestries for 15p and their names were written in books. We think one of the books is missing and would love to know if anyone can shed a light on its whereabouts. If you or your family were included in the tapestries, we would love to see you at the open day where you can take a trip down memory lane, and if you have individual stories the Study Group would like to talk to you . Portland WI will also be there showing off their scrapbooks. These show events and photos of members dating back to 1932.. If you were a WI member years ago, or had a relative of friend who was a member come along and see if you recognise anyonein the scrapbooks.
We have so many things to share in one day. We have refreshments, so that you can stay and chat and a raffle. This our first open day since covid. We would love to share it with you. Please come along and make it a successful day, with lots of Portland history for Portlanders old and new and visitors alike.
The St Georges Centre is situated in |Reforne just off of Easton. Just look for the flags.
