The Springfield Choral Society will capture the breadth of the Psalms' significance for musicians and for people more broadly. In meaning, from the ecstatic praise of Psalm 150 ("Let everything that hath breath, praise the Lord!") to the homesick lamentation of Psalm 137 ("By the rivers of Babylon we sat down, yea, wept"). In styles, we will present those from languid Renaissance polyphony to in-your-face Shapenote song; from the jazzy groves of Bernstein to the tangy discords of Ives and uniqueness of McFerrin. Our musical geography will cover Ukraine to Jamaica and parts of North America. Musicians of the Illinois Symphony Orchestra will accompany us as we allow the Book of Psalms to guide us on a kaleidoscopic journey through time and space. You will also hear the music of a local composer.
Tickets are only $15 and are available online (www.springfieldchoralsociety.org) and at the door.
