In celebration of our summer exhibition The Art of Tinkering, we are pleased to present the Bay Area theatrical premiere of Me and My Robot (2019, 30 min.), with filmmaker Mark Decena of Kontent Films. The documentary short chronicles the 2018 World Robot Olympiad in Thailand, following 18 teams of students from 10 countries. As they design problem-solving robots, these young international competitors use engineering as a universal language.

Video diaries made by the students themselves document their challenges and victories. We watch as they get acquainted with the rules of the competition, develop engineering skills and Lego ingenuity, and attempt to overcome real-time obstacles. The screening will also include video updates from a few of the contestants who are now in college. Their stories come together to spotlight a new generation of innovators who are having fun and changing the world.

Mark Decena is a writer, director, and producer of award-winning feature films, television programming, web films, and commercials. A three-time Sundance alumnus, Mark's first feature, Dopamine, won the Alfred P. Sloan Prize. Decena's work spans various themes from the nature of love to sustainable design and environmental justice. His short films, both narrative and documentary, have screened at festivals around the world.
