After being closed for nearly 2 months, the 10,000 sq. ft. Salvation Army Bakersfield thrift store features an updated interior including new paint, lighting, floors and fixtures, and an improved customer-friendly layout.
The donation drop-off has stayed open during the remodel, receiving gently used clothing, shoes, furniture and household items. A receipt for tax purposes is provided by an attendant at time of drop off who reminds donors that shopping at and donating to The Salvation Army helps fund a 6+ month, residential, no-fee, adult rehabilitation program in Bakersfield for 59 men dealing with substance abuse issues.
Since 1954, The Salvation Army’s Bakersfield Adult Rehabilitation Center has provided a safe and sober environment for those seeking tools for real change. “Our character-building program provides an opportunity to stabilize, regain confidence, and self-respect” says Captain Edith Mabie, Business Administrator for the Bakersfield Adult Rehabilitation Center. “Men find hope and purpose, allowing them to return to their families and live a life of self-reliance” continues Capt. Mabie.
The impact this program has in the community is long lasting. With graduation rates at 3x the national average for similar programs, a priority placed on the proven 12-step model, structure and fellowship, it’s no wonder many alumni find lasting hope and a lifetime of sobriety. Our Bakersfield facility serves over 22K meals per year to the 59 men at the residential rehabilitation center and services donors and shoppers in Kern County and northern Los Angeles County High Desert Communities.
