In the stripped-down spirit of the back-to-basic "before-times," this year we're taking a creative cue from the ‘90s underground: that time just prior to the digital deluge, when DIY was dope, handmade flyers were fly and crunk was queer as punk. The grungers were grunging, the riot grrrls were rioting, the BIPOCs and queers were effing fed up, and there wasn't a damn iPhone or influencer anywhere in sight. We're here, we're queer… get used to leaving your house and going all the way downtown and to the bar if you wanna get jiggy with it or get your freak on (scrubs, you can talk to the hand).

Inspired by the down and dirty DIY artivism and aesthetics of the ‘90s, we're taking you to an offline oasis outside today's digital infrastructure and all its inundations. ‘Cause in these times of so-called "new normals" (as if!), we can't help but wonder how us queers can continue to opt OUT: to find an anti-viral, analog abnormal. Embrace the unconventional, unvarnished and au natural. Keep on being cozy and (re-)connect beyond the bounds of the internet. Prepare yourself for OUTsider Y2-22 as we unplug from the mainframe, ‘mos: Time to put that rad back into radical!

About OUTsider Festival

OUTsider is an Austin-based transmedia nonprofit that celebrates the bold originality and creative nonconformity of the LGBTQ+ communities through the presentation of provocative, overlooked and out-of-the-box film, dance, theater, performance art, music, writing and visual art. Through its annual festival and conference, OUTsider unites queer artists, audiences and scholars from around the globe to exchange ideas, ignite conversations, transcend boundaries and experience new pleasures through artistic discovery.

OUTsider 2022 COVID-19 Policy
OUTsider has curated a semi-hybrid festival for 2022. All showcases will be in-person, with some online viewing and participation opportunities. OUTsider is entirely committed to the well-being of our communities. We care deeply about, and take very seriously our obligations to our attendees, their health and safety, and the health and safety of their loved ones. We recognize that the landscape of COVID-19 is ever-changing, therefore all protocols remain subject to public health guidance and the circumstances at the time of the event. Please check this page often as it will continue to be updated prior to and during the festival. 

OUTsider attendees, board members, staff, volunteers, and other affiliates must adhere to the following protocols and mitigation measures:
-All OUTsider participants will be required to provide proof of full vaccination against COVID-19 and are highly encouraged to be boosted, if eligible. Proof of vaccination will be verified prior to the festival (depending on affiliation) when you purchase your badge. Staying up to date with CDC's recommendations for COVID-19 vaccinations and boosters is strongly encouraged.
-N95 or KN95 masks are required to be worn properly over both the nose and mouth at all times while indoors (the Butterfly Bar, the inside theatre, the outside tent, and the Pony Shed). Masks are encouraged to be worn outdoors as well. 
-Food and drink will not be allowed in the inside theatre or the outside tent to allow for masking at all times.
-Free N95 or KN95 masks and hand sanitizer will be provided for those in need while supply is available.
-Both the inside theatre and the outside tent will have reduced capacity to allow for social distancing, and late entry will be prohibited. 
-There will be a concerted effort to reduce the presence of items requiring hand-to-hand exchange such as merch, flyers, programs, etc.
-All OUTsider participants are strongly encouraged to wash or sanitize hands frequently.
-Social distancing of at least 6 feet (approximately 2 meters) is strongly encouraged at all possible times.
-Staying up to date with CDC guidance is strongly encouraged.

You will not attend OUTsider 2022 if any of the following apply to you:
-You have tested positive for COVID-19 and have not met CDC recommended quarantine and isolation limits. 
-You are experiencing symptoms consistent with COVID-19.
-Within the previous 5 days, you have had close contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19, but have not met CDC recommended quarantine and isolation limits.

OUTsider reserves the right to revoke or suspend access to anyone who does not adhere to the above mentioned protocols and mitigation measures.
