In the first Conway Hall Sunday Concerts live, online event, in place of the usual talks and performances postponed because of our venue's temporary closure, we present an evening with Robert Hugill and Maria Canyigueral, hosted by our Director of Music Simon Callaghan.

18.30 BST • Introductory talk by Robert Hugill: In Search of Bach

Bach's cello suites are tantalising works. We have little in the way of secure background and no autograph. We know neither when, nor for whom they were written. There is even dispute about the exact instrument for which they were written.

19.00 BST • Performance by Maria Canyigueral (piano)

Bach: A Prelude and Fugue
Mompou: Selections from 'Songs and Dances'
Beethoven: Piano Sonata Op. 27 No. 1

Robert Hugill is a London-based composer, blogger, journalist and lecturer. He runs the highly regarded classical music blog, Planet Hugill, reviews for OperaToday.com and has contributed articles to magazines Classical Music and Opera Magazine. Robert lectures regularly to organisations such as the U3A, and he gives pre-concert talks at Conway Hall, where he also writes the programme notes.

Maria Canyigueral has been described by La Vanguardia as "a pianist of great personality".  One of the leading lights among the new generation of Spanish pianists, she has inspired collaborations with outstanding contemporary Spanish composers such as Antón García Abril, Benet Casablancas, Joan Magrané, Josep Maria Guix and others. Her partnership with Antón García Abril has been particularly successful, attracting high praise from critics and audiences across Europe. Having spent her formative years between Spain and the UK, she has since attracted a devoted following for her worldwide concerts.

** Conway Hall is a charity and we politely ask you to add a donation of at least £5 when registering.
