Lewis Deeney stands out for his unique, interlocking geometric compositions that unify hard edges with sensual painterly forms. His compelling and often paradoxical paintworks harmonise chaos and order, presenting transcendent expanses of bold textures and shimmering colours. Lewis draws from his interest in ancient ancestral wisdom and contemporary science and technological innovations, often combining mandala symbols with modern expressionist elements. The resulting introspective works act as a form of visual meditation, cultivating mindfulness and an awareness of the beauty around us, the potential within us, and the connections between us. Lewis fuses old and new in his creative process, paying homage to time-honoured mark-making while using digital media and laser cutters to complete his work.
A retrospective look at Deeneys artistic development over the past five years, A Odyssey of Chaos is an insight into the creative journey of one of Scotlands most exciting new artists. Featuring older paintings alongside new paintings from a new project as Lewis prepares to represent Scotland at the Interceltique festival in France this summer.
