Historian Ennis Duling will give an illustrated talk about Mount Independence in the Caretakers House at Bennington Battlefield State Historic Site on Saturday, June 21 at 2:00 PM. The house is located at 30 Caretakers Road, Hoosick Falls, NY 12090.
The presentation will feature both contemporary and historical maps and artwork, photos of artifacts found by archaeologists, and photos taken at today’s Vermont State Historic Site in Orwell, VT. It will stress the many links between Mount Independence and the American victory at the Battle of Bennington. The program is free and open to the public. Those wishing to attend are encouraged, though not required, to RSVP to [email protected].
Mount Independence is a rocky peninsula on Lake Champlain that was a major fortification blocking the British advance from Canada during the Revolutionary War. It was home to thousands of soldiers, making it one of the most populated places in the country for several months.
Mount Independence played a critical, too often forgotten role, in the American struggle for independence. It was evacuated by the American army in July 1777 at the start of the campaign that led to the Battle of Bennington. British and German troops occupied the site for several months.
Duling has written on the American Revolution for Vermont History, Historical New Hampshire, and the Journal of the American Revolution. He is the author of Thirteen Charges Against Benedict Arnold, which is a history of the accusations made by John Brown of Pittsfield, Massachusetts, years before Arnold’s treason. He is co-author and co-editor of Strong Ground: Mount Independence and the American Revolution, published by the Mount Independence Coalition in 2017.
