Looking to take your home garden to the next level this year? Or maybe you're a gardening wannabe, puzzling over how to get started. Whether it's time to re-think your landscape design, finally get serious about pests and diseases, or figure out what's at the root of disappointing plant performance, the MMGA's Home Horticulture Evening Lecture Series can help.

The 10-week series covers the same topics Certified Massachusetts Master Gardeners study as part of their training...but in a streamlined format tailored to home gardeners with busy lifestyles. Classes are held in the early evening, 1-1/2 hrs. each, and do not require outside reading, homework, testing or volunteering.

Presenters are senior Master Gardeners who have special expertise in their topics and are passionate about training others. Each lecture includes plenty of time for QandA. And in case you need your memory jogged later, there is a detailed handout for each talk.

Topics include key fundamentals like building great soil and how plants work…as well as practical how-to's like basic landscape design, perennial selection and care, and combating weeds, diseases and pests. Trained Master Gardeners will also be on hand to provide a free test of your soil's pH, a key component of successful gardening.

The lecture series will be held at the Museum of American Bird Art at Mass Audubon, Canton, just minutes from I-93 Exit 2A (Rt. 138 South). The museum offers free well-lighted parking and state-of-the-art classroom space surrounded by changing bird art exhibits. Come early to class and explore 2 miles of trails through a meadow, forest, and red maple swamp.
