Learn to Play returns with free music lessons across the UK

Music for All, the charity that believes everyone should have the opportunity to play music, is delighted to announce the return of its ever-popular free event ‘Learn to Play’ across the UK in September. This comes at a very important time following a surge of people taking up musical instruments during the pandemic - some for the very first time.

With research showing that 75 percent of people turned to music to get them through the recent lockdowns* and developments in online technology supporting social interaction and all types of education a new audience is ready and willing to Learn to Play.

After a crushing 18 months for music lovers this free weekend of taster music lessons on 25 and 26 September, in person and for the first time online, is designed to encourage more people to discover and develop a passion for music - which is one of the main aims of the charity. Music for All has been supporting disadvantaged music makers for over 20 years and in the past five years it has funded more than 500 players, educators, and community groups through its grant and award schemes.

Tony Followell, Chair of Trustees at Music for All, said:

“We know that making music changes lives and our free Learn to Play event offers a unique opportunity for people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds to come together for a positive musical experience. To date we have helped inspire tens of thousands of people with music over the 11 years that the initiative has run.

“With venues participating across the UK, from Shetland to Cornwall, we are encouraging people to sign up for their free lesson so they can experience the joy and benefits of making music. For the first time we will be introducing an online programme too for those unable to attend a venue and to engage with a wider more diverse audience of potential music makers. We hope this year we will attract record numbers of people across the UK and welcome the supportive messages we’ve received from our Ambassadors Orphy Robinson MBE, Ace from Skunk Anansie and Chi-chi Nwanoku OBE, and from Sheku Kanneh-Mason.”

Learn to Play ’21 is generously supported by the NAMM Foundation and partners include Music Industries Association, Musicians Union, Making Music and Music Mark.
