Kleio Quartet (29 January, Conway Hall Sunday Concerts)

From the ancient world of Henry Purcell through to the transcendentalist nature of Osvaldo Golijov's work, the Kleio Quartet presents a spectrum of colours and musical soundscapes. Purcell's ingenious fantasias for viol consort are a common thread here, the source of inspiration for countless English composers, not least for Benjamin Britten. Both Golijov and Britten feature the musical form of a chaconne, which appear in various guises, morphed and shaped beyond recognition. The programme culminates in the last of Beethoven's 'Razumovsky' quartets; full-blooded and hurtling away from the conventional, yet at all times keeping us well and truly grounded.

Founded in the 1880s, our chamber music concert series is the longest-running of its kind in Europe. Conway Hall was purpose-built in 1929 to host concerts and lectures, and they have continued here until the present day. The ethos of "affordable classical music for all" still remains.
