In a show of appreciation, The Friends of Cedarmere presents an historical pageant, on Saturday September 14, at 5:30 pm, celebrating the lives and friendship of poets William Cullen Bryant and Walt Whitman. This and other events sponsored by the Friends this Fall at Cedarmere, Bryant Library in Roslyn and Bryant Park in Manhattan are part of the national observance of Bryant’s 225th Birthyear and Whitman’s Bicentennial.
The Pageant, known as Kindred Wayfarers--featuring an original narrative in dialogue by playwright Fred Stroppel--will be performed at Cedarmere’s Sunken Garden by a tag team of community actors, including Stroppel himself. Among the featured Players are Ilene Isseks, Judith Rivera, Dr. Karen Siegel, John Canning, Esq., and members of the Dance Visions NY company, with singers Patti Dunham and Talya Smilowitz supported by Frank Ferrara, on guitar, and Mark Fiedler, on keyboard, directed by Paul Baserman.
A Reception will immediately follow the Play, after which a special Procession will bring the audience to the Harborside grass Amphitheater, where Dance Visions NY will present two new works choreographed by company Director Beth Jucovy to Bryant’s poems, read by Susan Thurman. Works choreographed by modern dance pioneer Isadora Duncan, inspired by the poetry of Whitman, are also featured in this dance showcase. Special Appearances by the honored Poets and a grand Finale send-off will conclude the event, with audience participation encouraged. (Rain date: 9/15, same times.)
