In a world of digitization and streaming the Oratorio Society of New York champions the tradition of the performance of grand choral works so that singers and audiences now, and in generations to come, can experience classic and contemporary masterpieces the way their composers intended they be heard - in person, and at the highest artistic standards. On Nov. 5, renowned conductor, Kent Tritle will lead the Oratorio Society of New York chorus, musicians, and soloists in this extraordinary, intimate performance of profoundly moving works by Rachmaninoff and Duruflé at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine. Sergei Rachmaninoff's a cappella Vespers and Maurice Duruflé's Requiem were composed in the shadows of the two world wars. Drawing upon the traditions of chant in the Eastern and Western rites, they offer a sublime transcendence that shimmers in the Cathedral's resonant acoustics. Contralto Kirsten Sollek and tenor John Riesen are the featured soloists in Rachmaninoff's Vespers. Sollek and baritone David Pike are joined by Arthur Fiacco, Jr. (cello) and David Briggs (organ) in this intimate performance of Duruflé's Requiem. This concert is supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council. Since its founding in 1873, the Oratorio Society of New York has continued to be an essential part of NYC's cultural fabric and is one of the city's longest-standing cultural organizations. The Society presented its first concert on December 3, 1873. A year later, on Christmas night, the Society began what has become an unbroken tradition of annual performances of Handel's Messiah at its musical home, Carnegie Hall, since its opening in 1891. The Society has always viewed bringing new music to New York audiences as part of its mission. The Society is proud of its history and heritage, and obligated to singers and audiences of the future, that they too are permitted to enjoy this extraordinary experience.
