Alistair Hicks was Senior Curator at Deutsche Bank for 20 years and has curated this remarkable exhibition of paintings by Joana Galego and Marcus Cope two leading artists. He describes the theme as follows: "Most innovation, most creative thoughts come from outsider moments, times when we feel ostracised or let out in the cold. Yet the dreams of getting together, of sparkling social intercourse, persist. We club together and we shut people out. It is the vicious circle of life. When we are in our exile we dream of that Bohemian lifestyle hovering, shimmering as a mirage on the horizon. There is a fragmentary element to the world of both artists in this show: Marcus Cope and Joana Galego."
JOANA GALEGO
Joana Galego is a young Portuguese artist whose powerfully intriguing works are artfully constructed spaces, resplendent in texture, form carved out of dark and shadow, and line. Galego's oeuvre is often compared to the work of post-impressionism but as well the artist notes her connection to the work of Peter Doig, sharing that in her contemporary practice she also seeks to create paintings that serve as a portal to an emotional state, evoking memory and sensibility through colours, shape, and texture. As such, an element of mystery remains at the core of her vision.
MARCUS COPE
British artist Marcus Cope's enigmatic work is an intriguing admixture of figural, abstract and narrative elements. Glimpses of fire, flickering light, and sfumato add to a sense of evocative mystery and surrealist beauty. Within these spaces we see the melancholic passage of time and memory as well as the celebration of colour, light, and the painterly process. This is a painterly mise-en-scene, set against backgrounds and elemental representation that function as sublime expanses of abstracted colour and patterns.
ALEPH CONTEMPORARY
INSIDER/OUTSIDER is the second in a series of exhibitions of work by contemporary painters held at The In and Out. Aleph Contemporary is a London-based contemporary art gallery with an international roster of emerging and mid-career artists and a forward-looking programme of curated exhibitions and events as well as collections, publications and virtual exhibitions. The name Aleph is inspired by Jorge Luis Borges' story of the same name and expresses a commitment to the importance of dialogue, invention, and the value of experiencing and understanding art today.
