FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

BELVIDERE, IL: This July 6th, 2019, the Boone County Museum of History will host a presentation of traditional songs like "The Farmer is the Man," to the dust bowl ballads of Woody Guthrie, to the works of contemporary songwriters, the subject of farm life has long been fertile ground for folk musicians. Award winning folklorist and songwriter Chris Vallillo performs a handpicked selection of the most poignant of these songs as way to look at the past and the future of the family farm.

This presentation is a chance to get a sneak peak of our new interactive exhibit: "Sowing Season: An Interactive History of Farming In Boone County". The exhibit will feature interactive features such as a farmers market, a circulating milking cow that children can learn how to milk, and a hail bail bully system. The exhibit will also feature a history of the farming community in Boone County.

The musical event will be co-produced by the Illinois Humanities Road Scholars Speakers Bureau, which invites Illinois authors, artists and educators to share their expertise and enthusiasm with people throughput the state, enabling local non-profit organizations to present free-admission cultural programs to their communities. The current edition of the Road Scholars Speakers Bureau, presented in cooperation with the Illinois Bicentennial Commission and the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, consists of presentations exploring Illinois history and culture in recognition of the state’s 200th anniversary.
