Guest speakers
11 AM Gene Phillips, camellia expert, of Gene's Camellia World in Sylvania, GA
Formerly with the 65-year, family-owned camellia nursery in Savannah
Noon Stan Gray, iris expert.
For many gardeners, the iris is one of their favorite perennials. Yet, time and again, growing them here in The Low Country has proven difficult or disappointing, if not downright futile. Our guest speaker Stan Gray has built a lifetime of experience growing iris of all different types, most recently for the past 15 years right here in Savannah. Currently Stan is a volunteer and iris specialist at the Coastal Georgia Botanical Gardens, where he has created the largest public display of iris in the world right here in our own backyard. Come listen to Stan share the results of his research and observations with you, so that you too can grow beautiful iris. He will be happy to answer your questions following his talk.
1 PM Robert Tyburski of New Orleans
Create a Southern Winter Color Garden using Annuals, Perennials and Herbs
2 PM Meg Kettlitz, master gardener,
A recent transplant from Atlanta and certified Master Gardener Extension Volunteer, will discuss how to attract birds to your garden, highlighting plants within Dale’s Garden. She also is the chair for Skidaway Audubon’s Nature Notices Garden project. This project’s goal is to plant native pollinator plants along public paths around Skidaway Island to help the Monarchs and other pollinators, including hummingbirds.
3 PM Ben Chaffee, permaculturalist, growing edible crops in your own backyard
Talks are in the garden at 103 Lee Boulevard and are included in your $20. Please arrive five minutes prior to the talk.
