In Room for Not Knowing, abstract artist Georgina Montgomery explores what it means to accept, and not be undone by, life's unpredictability.
"[In life] letting there be room for not knowing is the most important thing of all. ... We call something bad; we call it good. But really we just don't know." (Pema Chödrön)
Featured are new photography-based single and assembled print works from her "painting with crazed light" project, Caustic Optimism.
Using a simple photography-based approach, she purposely disrupts her view of ordinary backdrops to see the upended situation with fresh eyes. From this visual chaos she captures rich, painting-like works that are as unexpected as they are compelling.
Montgomery coined the term Caustic Optimism, a blend of caustic optics and cautious optimism. Since 2019, she has been shooting through a single warped-glass object, drawn to the unique compositions, shapes and colours she finds in the highly refracted and reflected light patterns-what physicists call caustic optics. Filtered through her optimistic mindset, this crazed light becomes both material and subject for her project.
