The Alternative Gift Market Cape Cod 2020 has been renamed and reimagined to offer online shopping, safely from home, from Saturday, November 7 to Sunday, November 15. Shoppers are invited to explore the AGM website and learn about twenty-four amazing local, national, and global organizations. When the online market opens on November 7, gifts can be purchased in honor of family and friends or as a charitable donation.

Charities chosen for the Market this year focus their efforts on supporting the most vulnerable victims of the pandemic, promoting respect for all people, fighting poverty, and battling climate change. Local organizations include Alzheimer's Family Support Center of Cape Cod, Belonging to Each Other, Boston Area Gleaners, Cape Cod Climate Change Collaborative, Cape Cod and Islands Major Crisis Relief Fund, CC Council of Churches, No Place for Hate Falmouth, Upper Cape Food Pantries, Volunteers in Public Schools Falmouth, and Wôpanȃak Language Reclamation Project.

There are also four national and ten international charitable project sponsors. Shoppers can learn about the work of all twenty-four tax-exempt, non-profit organizations on the Alternative Gift Market Cape Cod website. While shoppers from prior years may miss the spirit of the in-person market, online shoppers can still rejoice in the opportunity to effect change, inspire hope, and share information about their donations with those who will appreciate a socially responsible gift. Shoppers may also appreciate the ease of charitable giving from home at just one website that does not share their contact information thus ensuring they will not receive future solicitations for donations.

A wide variety of gifts are offered at affordable prices. For example, $15 stocks a food pantry's shelves with 65 pounds of fresh produce; $25 helps to fund pre-packaged disaster kits for Doctors Without Borders; $30 supports learning activities for the Cape Youth Environmental Network; $55 provides one week of training for a community midwife in Somaliland, or supports Community Racial Justice programs in Falmouth; $75 helps train a Palestinian clinician in Israel; $90 houses 2 homeless people for 3 days on Cape Cod.

The AGM is sponsored by a growing coalition of faith communities on Cape Cod who have cooperated for the last thirteen years to sponsor the Upper Cape Alternative Gift Market held in Falmouth each November. Sponsoring congregations organize the market and cover all expenses so that 100% of money raised goes to participating charities. Charities are carefully vetted and chosen by representatives of these congregations. For the last four years, average annual proceeds have exceeded $40,000.

Sponsoring Congregations for 2020 are Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Falmouth, Falmouth Jewish Congregation, St. Barnabas Episcopal Church, First Congregational Church of Falmouth, Church of the Messiah, John Wesley United Methodist Church, Waquoit Congregational Church, Mashpee Congregational Church and Christ the King Parish Mashpee.

In addition, six Supporting Congregations help publicize the market and donate to one of the charitable projects. They include Bourne and Cataumet United Methodist Churches, Christ Lutheran Church of Falmouth, First Church Sandwich UCC, North Falmouth Congregational Church, West Falmouth Religious Society of Friends, and the Unitarian Church Barnstable.
