DREAM WITH THE FISHES was shot in nearly 60 locations in 23 days throughout the Bay Area, and triggered a bidding war after its 1997 Sundance premiere; its distribution deals with both Sony Pictures Classics and Lakeshore International facilitated the film being exhibited theatrically and on home video throughout the world. The film’s enduring and universal message of the importance of grabbing all we have out of life today has made it somewhat of a cult classic.
An homage to classic ‘70s films like Paul William’s DEALING, Hal Ashby’s HAROLD AND MAUDE, John Schlesinger’s MIDNIGHT COWBOY (1969) and Ulu Grosbard’s STRAIGHT TIME, DREAM WITH THE FISHES serves up a head-spinning tale of experimentation, voyeurism and friendship in the mid-1990s. Heroin addict Nick (Brad Hunt), who’s been given only a few weeks to live, enters into a life-or-death pact with Terry (David Arquette), who’s facing his own set of demons…but not long after they depart on a road trip to facilitate living out their fantasies, life keeps getting in the way. The film features a fantastic time-capsule of a soundtrack with Squirrel Nut Zippers, Nick Drake, The Waterboys, Leroy and The Drivers, Cal Tjader and more.
This extra-special, One-Night-Only 25th Anniversary Screening will be the first time that the cast has reunited since the film’s release, and they and some of the filmmakers will participate in conversation following the screening of this Sundance — and Bay Area — favorite.
