Elise Schiller will read from her memoir Even If Your Heart Would Listen: Losing My Daughter to Heroin.  A discussion of the current overdose crisis, American drug policy, and approaches to drug treatment will follow.  The author's daughter, Giana Natali, died on 1/3/14 in a treatment center after attempting for two years to get well by accessing treatment in six rehab facilities and several outpatient programs. Giana was 33, a veterinary nurse with a strong academic and athletic background. Ms. Schiller was able to access her daughter's medical records and set about researching the care she received. The book is a memoir of a mother-daughter relationship during a life and death battle, as well as an indictment of the rehab industry in the United States. This event is relevant to almost everyone, given the scope of the drug overdose crisis, which is especially acute in the greater Philadelphia region. A book signing will conclude the event.
