California Youth Chinese Symphony (CYCS), a Santa Clara-based non-profit youth orchestra, is going to hold its first in-person concert since 2020 when the group was forced to cancel its performance plans due to Covid-19. The group had been zooming their music lessons for more than one and half years and they have only resumed their in-person rehearsals earlier this season. This "re-opening" concert marks its celebration for all the hard work the local youth and their music coaches had struggled through this past year to co-exist with the virus amid Delta and Omicron waves.

The concert "Colorful Melody - The Angelic Moon" will take place at Spangenberg Theater in Palo Alto's Gunn High School on May 28, 2022 (Saturday) at 3 PM. Performers comprised mostly of Asian Americans from age 7 to 18 who learn and play Chinese traditional instruments to stay connected to their cultural roots. The concert features The Angelic Moon, a classical Chinese music ensemble, the Mystic Fragrance, a modern composition with a theme of the Silk Road, and an oriental interpretation of the Phantom of the Opera. Different Chinese traditional instruments will be featured in the form of solos and ensembles including an opera-style bamboo flute solo Affection for Qinchuan.

Date/Time: May 28, 2022 (Saturday) 3 PM
Venue: Spangenburg Theater, Henry M Gunn High School, Palo Alto, CA 94306.

Elaine Liu, the bamboo flute soloist of the upcoming concert who is a high school senior from Saratoga said, "I'm both nervous and excited to be performing in person for the first time in two years, as it may also be one of the last times I perform on such a big stage in front of so many people. This final annual concert will be an accumulation of my years of practice, so I hope to perform to the best of my abilities. I will be performing in honor of all of the people who have supported me through the years, as I am very grateful to them for giving me this priceless opportunity to thrive as a young musician. "

Soon-to-be UC Davis freshman, Sunny Liu,  who has been playing with the group since he was 9 said, "I am extremely excited to be back to performing in person after two years. Although remote performances are doable, it does not give the satisfaction of having a successful performance and inspiring people. I look forward to our upcoming performance."

California Youth Chinese Symphony (CYCS) was founded in 2007. It has a mission of promoting musical diversity and enriching the cultural lives of our communities by introducing Chinese traditional music and instruments. It provides high-quality and diversified education on Chinese traditional instruments and creatively integrates East-West music using both Chinese and Western instruments. Its classes were taught by first-generation immigrants who majored in the performance of Chinese traditional instruments. Most students are local Chinese Americans and its past performances had been enjoyed by many communities all over the Bay Area.
