You've seen Allan Frias choreography at Golden State Warriors games: He directs and choreographs the Warriors Junior Jam Dance Team, and also choreographs for their Blue Crew, and Hardwood Classics squads. He was a finalist on Fox TV's So You Think You Can Dance. His work has been featured many times at SF Dance Fest, Fresh Meat Festival, Battlefest and many more. He's run large outdoor dance classes at the Kidstage at Stern Grove Festival.
Allan's newest creation "Curtains" will hit the Dance Mission Theater stage for one weekend only the first weekend of November. This 90-minute show traverses the struggle for meaning in the territory around health and well-being.
In addition to being a rare opportunity to see Allan dance, it also features dancer Brandie Norris, a longtime member of Allan's Mind over Matter Dance company, poet Diane Carroll, and Allan's kids dance team Young Minds, as well as a group of Allan's performance workshop dancers. The Mind Over Matter dance company, which he started in 1993 dancing outdoors at Crocker Amazon Park, has gone on to shows across the Bay Area and beyond over the last 29 years. For the Young Minds, which started later as an offshoot, this show will mark the culmination of up to 10 years of training with Allan.
The SF Examiner has called Allan "one of the West Coast's foremost hip hop choreographers."
Project Artivism, a local non-profit focused on bringing multidisciplinary art experiences to marginalized communities in San Francisco, is cosponsoring the event.
