Cape Cod Chamber Orchestra: Love Letters

This program presents a powerful exploration of love, loss, and emotional depth through three masterworks spanning the Romantic and early 20th-century repertoire. From the introspective lyricism of Schumann to the raw anguish of Mendelssohn and the wistful beauty of Sibelius, each piece offers a unique perspective on the human experience.

Robert Schumann's Cello Concerto in A Minor, Op. 129 is an unconventional yet profoundly expressive work, composed in 1850 during a period of personal and artistic transformation. Unlike traditional concertos that emphasize soloistic brilliance, Schumann's work unfolds in a continuous, through-composed structure, allowing for an intimate and seamless dialogue between the soloist and orchestra. The concerto is rich with tender lyricism, moments of melancholic introspection, and surges of passionate intensity, reflecting Schumann's deeply poetic approach to music.

Felix Mendelssohn's String Quartet No. 6 in F Minor, Op. 80, presented here in a string orchestra arrangement, is one of the most emotionally charged compositions of his career. Written in 1847 following the sudden death of his sister Fanny, the quartet is a work of raw grief and unrelenting turbulence. The restless first movement surges with stormy energy, while the second movement offers a fragile, almost ghostly respite. The anguished intensity returns in the third movement before culminating in a finale that is as defiant as it is tragic. Jean Sibelius' Rakastava, Op. 14, originally conceived as a choral work, was later arranged for string orchestra, timpani, and triangle.
