ANGELA VERBRUGGE
-
Vocal Jazz
Angela Verbrugge Quartet Band description Canadian jazz vocalist Angela Verbrugge (2020 JazzTimes Readers' Poll for "Best Female Vocalist") gives every note a passionate and emotional expression. The charismatic singer, composer and lyricist spent the last year on tour in Canada, Europe, Turkey and Japan.

Verbrugge is joined by some of Germany's best jazz musicians: Clemens Orth on piano, Caris Hermes on bass and Xaver Hellmeier on drums.

The band brings the authentic swing feel, paired with finely crafted arrangements, giving classic vocal and instrumental jazz standards, as well as their own compositions, a fresh, timeless sound.

"Angela has good humor, common sense and good taste, a rare combination. She is an incredibly astute comedian, social critic, swing psychologist and a born storyteller. Angela has a remarkably winning voice. She is a joy to listen to, sometimes citrusy, sometimes warm and hugging. She is a fun, playful copywriter. Listen and be excited. Her art is her own and it offers rare joys." Michael Steinman, JazzLives

About the singer
Angela Verbrugge has been touring the world singing about love gone right (or very wrong!). Her lyrics range from humorous tales of romance while trying to eat buttery corn at a summer picnic, to the mad dash panicked adventure of being late, to sweet reflections newfound infatuation, to sour reflections on feeling wholly unloveable. The whimsical style takes inspiration from vintage movie musicals (such as those with Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers), traditional swing era pop and American songbook and jazz standards. Born in Kingston, Ontario, Angela has a penchant for drama having studied theater in Toronto (and just generally being a dramatic person!) before moving to western Canada in 1997. Verbrugge has released three critically-acclaimed albums, in 2019, 2022 and the latest in May 2024 on Origin Records out of Seattle. Rave reviews of her recordings have resulted in performance opportunities in far-flung places including Japan, Türkiye, Luxembourg, Germany, UK and many Canadian provinces, all in the last four years. Her music has been played on radio around the world including CBC, NPR, and she took the number one spot on the Earshot charts several weeks.

About the band:
The music of the Clemens Orth Trio represents the fusion of American post-bop and the European musical tradition with the influences of classical music, the avant-garde and world music, whereby the reference to the jazz tradition always plays an important role. Within the trio, the musicians bear equal responsibility for the music, from which a high degree of creativity and joy of playing flows. Composition and improvisation merge into a kaleidoscope of ever new patterns and impressions.

For 15 years now, double bassist Caris Hermes has been igniting her luminous sound world full of references, ramifications and sensitive moods. Everything seems possible for them in the area of swing, groove, straight ahead and subtle modern jazz. As a sidewoman, she currently performs 150 national and international shows per year in her live portfolio. Highlights include concert series with Paul Hellers and Martin Sasse, Hans Dekker and large ensembles such as the WDR Big Band and Glenn Miller Orchestra®. With engagements on leading jazz platforms (Moers Festival, Jazz Rally Düsseldorf, Viersen Jazz Festival) and award-winning showcases, Caris' collaborations are rousing performances for thousands of jazz fans. Since 2011, Cari has produced ten studio albums (including Unit Records, fattoria musica) with her projects of up-and-coming jazz musicians and established jazz greats.

When Xaver Hellmeier returned from New York City after studying with renowned jazz drummer Joe Farnsworth, he quickly made a name for himself as one of the best European jazz drummers rooted in this tradition. He has performed with artists such as Harold Mabern, Eric Alexander, Mike LeDonne, John Webber, Mike LeDonne, Houston Person, Champian Fulton, David Hazeltine and Peter Bernstein. He has performed in jazz clubs and jazz festivals in Europe, the USA, Mongolia, the United Arab Emirates and other countries.
