The novel was published in Portuguese in 1947, becoming the first novel to be published by a Cape Verdean author and is not only noted for its revealing portrait of island life but for its use of indigenous Creole within the Portuguese language.
The reading of this play aims to explore the unique world of Lopes' striking novel but also serves to introduce audiences to the work of Teatro Internacional De Cabo Verde (TICAVE), a new company based in Cape Verde producing plays in the English language.
Established in 2020 by Cape Verdean actor, writer and filmmaker Bernardino T. Fernandes, TICAVE aims to project Cape Verde as a unique hub for global theatrical entertainment with their first professional production due to take place in the autumn of 2022.
