Attorney General Bonta will speak about the importance of people-powered movements; and what we can learn from the fact that the most impactful, long-lasting progress our country has seen has been led by communities. Today, engaged citizens, activists, organizers, and communities still have the power to create the change our country desperately needs. AG Bonta will discuss the importance of investing in, empowering, and uplifting our communities.
As the Attorney General of California, Rob Bonta is the first person of Filipino descent and the second Asian-American to occupy the position. His passion for justice and fairness was instilled in him by his parents, who served on the frontlines of some of America's most important social justice movements. Instilling in him the lessons they learned from the United Farm Workers and the civil rights movement, Bonta's parents lit a fire inside him to fight against injustice — to stand up for those who are taken advantage of or harmed. It's why he decided to become a lawyer — to help right historic wrongs and fight for people who have been harmed.
The Barbara Lee and Elihu Harris Lecture Series, co-produced by the Martin Luther King Jr. Freedom Center and Peralta Community College District, promotes an ample exchange of ideas to help inspire and move forward new leadership and servantship. Lectures are organized by the youth and staff at the Freedom Center, with a focus on promoting ideas and actions rooted in principles of nonviolence, and lessons from some of our nation’s most significant civil rights struggles.
