This is a self guided experience as staff led tours are currently not offered, but visitors will be able to experience the wind swept island and learn about its layered history though outdoor interpretive signs, free Discovery Guide and digital Apps with historical information, stories, and more. Rangers will be stationed around the island to assist visitors and answer questions.
Included:
- Round-trip ferry ride to Alcatraz Island
- Access to outdoor spaces such as historic Eagle Plaza, Recreation Yard, Sally Port and Rose Garden along the East, West and North Road. Scenic vistas and iconic close up view of the exterior of Cell House, Building 64, Warden’s House, Water Tower, Officer’s Club and Model Industries Building.
- Views of Occupation era political messaging left during the 1969 by Indians of All Tribes
- Special Addition Audio Tour - This 30-minute tour shares entertaining and compelling stories about Alcatraz.
-Native American Occupation era political messaging on the exterior of many Island buildings
Schedule
11:00am - 3:00pm
You can stay on Alcatraz Island as long as you like, but allow two (2) hours to cruise to the Island, take the Special Addition Audio Tour audio tour, explore the rest of the Island and return via ferry to Pier 33 Alcatraz Landing. It is recommended that you arrive at least one half hour prior to your departure time. For more information visit the Departure and Return schedules.
Please note: The roads and walkways on Alcatraz are steep. The distance from the dock to the Cellhouse is approximately 1/4 mile (.4km) and the elevation change is 130 feet (40 meters), the equivalent of walking up a 13-story building. The roads and walkways are wide with several places to stop along the way to rest and take in the breathtaking views. Comfortable athletic or walking shoes are strongly recommended. There is no food service offered on the ferry and consumption of food prohibited on island.

Pier 33 Alcatraz Landing
The Alcatraz Landing area at Pier 33 includes the Ticketbooth, waiting and boarding areas, all of which are accessible.
Pier 33 Alcatraz Landing is the launch site to Alcatraz Island. The Alcatraz Landing area at Pier 33 includes SafeCruise Guest Screening, the Ticketbooth, waiting and boarding areas, all of which are accessible.
When guests arrive at Pier 33 Alcatraz Landing they will need to be screened in order to access Alcatraz Landing. Screenings include temperature checks and face coverings are required. Please follow this link for more information on what to expect and SafeCruise procedures.
Accessible bathrooms are found at Pier 33 Alcatraz Landing and on all Alcatraz Cruises vessels.
Copies of the safety messages shown onboard all Alcatraz Cruises vessels are also available in Braille. Please ask for a copy at the Pier 33 Ticketbooth or request one from a uniformed Alcatraz Cruises crew member on any of our vessels. The safety announcement and introduction video shown on all Alcatraz Cruises vessels are closed captioned.
