It all started October 21, 2013 when Vinegrass presented their first concert with an inspiring young band Mandolin Orange (now Watchhouse) at O'Shea's Olde Inne. Since that magical evening, Vinegrass has gone on to produce over 150 uniquely curated shows in the American/Bluegrass genre, collaborating with venues across Cape Cod. On October 1st, the 9th annual Vinegrass Music Festival at Truro Vineyards will fill the fields with fiddle and guitar once again. Vinegrass will also be celebrating 10 years as an organization and 2023 also highlights awarding over $100,000 in musical scholarships, grants, and instruments to students, teachers, and schools on Cape Cod.

Vinegrass is Monica Rizzio's "pay-it-forward" contribution to music: she is a Cape-based musician who grew up in an impoverished area of East Texas, without the resources as a child to embolden her passion for music. "There is something so beautiful when you see a child enveloped in music, that is all they hear, it is who they are in every breath. It is difficult to understand as a parent, if that parent doesn't play music, but that passion needs to be fostered and supported, which is what Vinegrass is all about it." Each year Vinegrass awards several sustaining music scholarships, which follow the students throughout their entire college career. Vinegrass shows and festivals have always been free to students under 15, "we want the kids to see music, to meet the musicians, to know that it's possible to do what you love so much", says Rizzio.

FESTIVAL and BANDS

The festival will feature (4) nationally touring bands on the main stage, and several regional musicians on the pavilion stage. The eclectic mix of music, steeped in the Americana and Bluegrass styles, will showcase innovative songwriting, musicians who have mastered their craft in fiddle, mandolin, guitar, and a joyous audience that appreciates original music!

The High Hawks: The Festival Headliner is a supergroup "The High Hawks feature members of Leftover Salmon, Railroad Earth and Hard Working Americans, and they make expansive roots-rock in the vein of The Grateful Dead. A bit of breezy jam-rock that extolls the pleasures of music and togetherness." - Rolling Stone Magazine
The band all met on the national festival circuit over the years and a common desire to make music and hang out created The High Hawks. The band only comes together on special occasions and Vinegrass is excited to welcome their first show in New England.

The Last Revel: After a 5 year hiatus, The original trio has reunited to produce new music with a revitalized appreciation for camaraderie and creativity. Now living in three different cities across the US, these three independently talented singer-songwriters bring together the sounds of Nashville TN, Minneapolis MN, and Bozeman MT to create Front Porch Americana soundscapes that are equally original as they are timeless. Drawing influence from their salt of the earth Midwest ethos the band's songs so naturally blend the genres of Folk, Old Time String-Band and Indie Rock to create a sound that echoes the current heartbeat of America.

Twisted Pine: Boston-based Twisted Pine bass player Chris Sartori sums it up best, "You could call it, 'neo-folk indie soul avant jazz jam grass-icana' but that doesn't quite roll off the tongue. We're definitely rooted in bluegrass. We grew out of that community, and are continually inspired by its explorers like Bela Fleck, Jerry Douglas, Sierra Hull and Billy Strings to name a couple. They've helped grow Bluegrass into a mighty big tree, and we've got our little Pine branch somewhere on there. Our bluegrass is jazzy, our indiefolk is poppy, our grooves are FUNKY, and Anh Phung is playing flute! We're influenced by bands like Lake Street Dive and the Wood Brothers. Like them, the music is easier to feel than it is to describe."

Monica Rizzio's Round-Up: Vinegrass founder and Cape Cod's Washashore Cowgirl will kick off the festival with her bad the Round-Ups. No stranger to the local music scene, Rizzio is an award winning songwriter and brings her alt-country original music inspired by her Texas up-bringing and years spent in Nashville to the shores she now calls home. Rizzio is a versatile musician, touring across the country on her own, she also plays fiddle and guitar with Tom Rush, and owns and teaches at Washashore Music in Orleans.
