Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States and the newest federal holiday. Although the Emancipation Proclamation had become official more than two years earlier on Jan. 1, 1863, Juneteenth refers to June 19, the date in 1865 when the Union Army arrived in Galveston, Texas to announce that the Civil War was over and enslaved persons were free under the proclamation. The word Juneteenth derives from a combination of "June" and "nineteenth".

The understanding and excitement of Juneteenth is growing at a phenomenal rate. Cities and States all across the U.S. and beyond are realizing the wonderful opportunity we have to come together in appreciation, reconciliation, and commemoration. During Juneteenth we acknowledge the African American spirit and pay tribute to the roles and contributions which have enriched our society.

In cities across the country, people of all races, nationalities and religions are joining hands to truthfully acknowledge a period in our history that shaped and continues to influence our society today.

The Juneteenth event is a free indoor/outdoor event for the public sponsored by the Town of Elkton, Wright's AME Church, Cecil County Health Dept, Elkton Colored School Museum, ChristianaCare-Cecil County, Cecil County Library, United Way-Cecil County, Elkton Alliance, and many others. It follows the Juneteenth theme " A Day of Recognition, Restoration, Celebration".

At its core, Juneteenth is about taking a moment to reflect on and acknowledge our nation’s past as well as coming together to forge a better future. It is both a celebration of progress made and a re-commitment to push forward, and welcomes those of all races, ethnicities, religions and backgrounds. We emphasize unity in the community and this year through our community partners are focusing on health, education, and information.

The event will feature live entertainment from Walnut St. YMCA Essence Legacy Performance Arts and Griots Wa Umoja (Folklorists of Unity), Cecil County Colored Schools documentary preview, Spoken Word by Mr. Thomas Wesley, Live DJ, and headliner, Professor Dale Green of Morgan State University. Free Food and drinks, Children activities, face painting, Freedom Market vendors and much more!!!
