The Bristol Historical and Preservation Society's House Tour 2019 offers a unique opportunity to look inside twelve of downtown Bristol's most interesting houses. A free hop on/hop off trolley will guide you to these private homes as well as along the vibrant and historic streets of Bristol, RI. Visitors will experience firsthand a wide variety of architectural styles while walking in the midst of this waterfront community dating back to 1680.
The oldest house open for the Tour, the Lafayette House built in 1698, is where the Marquis de Lafayette based his 1778 Revolutionary War headquarters. Visitors will also view three Federal Style homes with their classic doorways, magnificent woodwork, and many fireplaces. Two Greek Revival houses tell their own and very different stories, one with many changes and the other with its original floor plan still intact. A 1912 Dutch Revival, built as a wedding present, proudly shows off its fanciful fireplace mantels. An 1872 Second Empire Style carriage house and an 1848 stone schoolhouse both have been converted into unique private residences. Included also is the romantic "Seven Oaks", a Gothic Revival Style stone "castle", complete with turrets, roof cresting, and spires. Last, but not least, are two contemporary homes designed using elements from a variety of 19th century Victorian architectural styles.
