INTRODUCTION:

As per industry estimates there are around 30,000 public Wi-Fi hotspots in the country in 2016 and it is planned to reach 210,000 by 2018. This is a significant jump in number of public Wi-Fi hotspots in the country in the next two years thanks to Smart City, City Wide Wi-Fi, Digital India and increased focus on Wi-Fi offload by telcos. It looks India will also follow global strategy with respect to public Wi-Fi hotspots. For Digital India to succeed, the government's focus is to increase Wi-Fi hotspots in the country and the recent TRAI recommendations also focuses on how to increase the number of public Wi-Fi hotspots in the country. TRAI recommendations are: Amending the terms of the ISP license to allow for sharing of active infrastructure, in line with the Unified License and sharing of infrastructure to include Wi-Fi equipment such as Wi-Fi router, Access point, and backhaul is also allowed; consider de-licensing spectrum in the 5.725 - 5.825 GHz spectrum band for outdoor usage, and expedite decision on allocating E-band (71-76 GHz and 81-86 GHz) and V-band (5-64 GHz) to service providers; new framework for setting up of Public Data Offices (PDOs) whereby PDOs in agreement with Public Data Office Aggregators (PDOAs) should be allowed to provide public Wi-Fi services; and authentication through eKYC, eCAF and other electronic modes be allowed for the purposes of KYC obligations.

The first edition of My India Wi-Fi India Summit & Awards 2017 is being organized on 24th August 2017 at The Imperial Hotel, New Delhi, India. The one-day event is being organized by DigiAnalysys - focused towards bringing multiple stakeholders from the telecom, Govt and allied sectors together. Upholding a collaborative approach, the comprehensive participation will align industry influencers from different sectors to explore areas of working in hand in hand to bridge the digital divide.

KEY INDUSTRY STATISTICS:

  • BSNL plans to deploy 100,000 Wi-Fi hotspots within 18-24 months. 70,000 Wi-Fi hotspots will be from BSNL resources and 20,000 Wi-Fi hotspots through Capex model.
  • Facebook has deployed 700 Express Wi-Fi hotspots in states of Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, and Gujarat by signing with local ISPs. The company has also partnered with Bharti Airtel to launch an additional 20,000 hotspots over the next few months.
  • In 2016, RailTel commissioned Railwire Fast Wi-Fi services along with Google at 110 railway stations with 115 stations enabled till date. The services are being used by over 6 million users monthly. In the current year, Google is in the process of extending the project at another 200 stations during the current year. In parallel to providing Wi-Fi at urban areas, RailTel is also expanding Railwire Wi-Fi services at 200 rural railway stations across the country. These stations shall also be provided with a Digital Service Centre to provide various E-gov services, digital literacy and various online services for the rural population. Google is planning to provide Wi-Fi at approximately 400 stations i.e. all A1/A category railway stations.
  • Reliance Jio is planning to connect 30,000 schools and colleges with Wi-Fi and high speed Internet. In toto, Reliance Jio has plans to deploy around 1 million Wi-Fi hotspots in the country.
  • Wi-Fi and mobile-connected devices will generate 73 percent of Internet traffic by 2021. Wi-Fi: 53 percent; cellular: 20 percent; fixed: 27 percent as per Cisco VNI report 2017.
  • Globally, total public W-Fi hotspots (including homespots) will grow 6-fold from 2016 to 2021 from 94 million in 2016 to 541.6 million by 2021 as per Cisco VNI report 2017.
  • Some have speculated that Wi-Fi offload will be less relevant after 4G networks are in place because of the faster speeds and more abundant bandwidth. However, 4G networks have attracted high-usage devices such as advanced smartphones and tablets, and now 4G plans are subject to data caps similar to 3G plans. For these reasons, Wi-Fi offload is higher on 4G networks than on lower-speed networks.

DigiAnalysys shall be hosting India’s first ever “Wi-Fi Leadership Awards” to recognize the initiatives taken by stakeholders towards the accomplishment of the Digital India Dream. The awards will recognize & honor businesses and organizations that are harnessing power of Wi-Fi and other related access technologies to transform business processes, improve delivery of public services and create a positive impact on society.
