Yoga: A Holistic Approach to Substance Use Disorder Recovery” will be presented on Tuesday December 17, 2019; 7:30pm-9:00pm, by Erin Shawgo, LLMSW, CIYT, C-IAYT; Dawn Farm Outpatient Therapist. Western cultures are learning what our eastern counterparts have known for centuries: yoga promotes overall wellness and has beneficial effects for people who have a variety of physical and mental health challenges. Research shows us that yoga decreases stress hormones, increases mood-benefiting neurotransmitters, and helps new neural pathways form in the brain. As an integrated mind-body approach, yoga facilitates personal and spiritual growth, benefits both physical and mental health and reaches areas of the brain that may not be reached by behavioral techniques alone, such as areas impacted by trauma. People in recovery from substance use disorders have found that yoga helps them cope with and reduce stress, enhance coping and self-regulation skills, manage craving, and feel better overall. This presentation will review the research supporting yoga as an effective complementary practice for promoting recovery from substance use disorders, discuss specific ways that yoga can benefit recovering people, and provide suggestions for developing a personal yoga practice. This program is part of the Dawn Farm Education Series, a FREE, annual education series developed to provide accurate, helpful, hopeful, practical, current information about substance use disorders, recovery, family and related issues; and to dispel the myths, misinformation, secrecy, shame and stigma that prevent people with addiction and their families from getting help and getting well.  All programs are free and open to anyone interested.  Registration is not required. 1.5 hours of free C.E. approved by MCBAP (Michigan Certification Board for Addiction Professionals) is provided. A certificate to document attendance is provided on request. The Education Series is organized by Dawn Farm, a non-profit community of programs providing a continuum of services for people with substance use disorders.
