Delight in the warmth of chamber music in the comfort of our sanctuary. Dramatic Piano Quartet No. 3 in c minor by Johannes Brahms alongside the premiere of a new piano quartet by John Kramer.

Featured artists comprise Julia Cash, violin; Amelia Hollander Ames, viola; Sam Ou, cello; and John Kramer, piano. A reception will follow the performance. Handicapped accessible; street parking is available. Ticket prices are a donation to the Winchester Unitarian Society.

Brahms began composing the "Piano Quartet No. 3 in C minor, Op. 60" in his 20s, but he did not complete it until 20 years later, in 1875. Its brooding quality reflects a difficult time in Brahms's life, when his friend and fellow composer Robert Schumann was suffering from mental illness. This piano quartet is sometimes called the Werther Quartet, after Goethe's novel The Sorrows of Young Werther.

Violist Amelia Hollander Ames has toured, taught, and collaborated internationally. She has appeared locally with the Boston Philharmonic, the Portland Symphony, the Radius Ensemble, the Rhode Island Philharmonic, and the American Repertory Theater. Violinist Julia Cash performs with the Boston Modern Orchestra Project, Boston Ballet, Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra, and Chamber Orchestra of Boston. She is on the faculties of the New England Conservatory Preparatory School, Boston Latin School, and the Boston Youth Symphony Orchestras. As a chamber musician, cellist Sam Ou has performed with the Borromeo String Quartet and at numerous summer venues, including Tanglewood and the Sarasota, Musicorda, Santa Fe, and La Jolla music festivals. He is on the faculties at New England Conservatory Preparatory School and the Powers Music School. Pianist, composer, and arranger John Kramer has performed widely throughout the U.S. and in France and has received numerous commissions for piano, organ, orchestral, and choir music. He is Music Director Music Director at Winchester Unitarian Society and is on the faculty at Berklee College of Music.
