The volunteer-led Growing and Growth Collective (GGC) and its fiscal sponsor, Partners Achieving Community Transformation (PACT), are striving to leverage urban agriculture as a means of social action to help improve health outcomes, deepen community engagement and foster economic empowerment in high-BIPOC and low SES neighborhoods such as the Near East Side. In order to accomplish these aims, GGC is facilitating responsive, culturally-relevant and evidence-based programming around: Agricultural Education in Cities; Food Access and Affordability; Comprehensive Health and Wellness; and Equitable Community Development.

During Sow the Seeds for GGC -- a fundraiser event that will be held virtually on Thursday, May 6, 2021 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. -- core volunteers will share highlights on the goals for 2021. Philanthropic investments are needed for full implementation of the current plan. Aspirations include building an entirely new garden on Hildreth Avenue that will feature 30 raised beds and "foods for health" programming. Additionally, the team is aiming to construct a high tunnel hoop house on Garfield Avenue that will supply fresh produce into the winter months. Sow the Seeds for GGC offers individuals, corporate representatives, program officers for foundations and leaders of community entities the chance to fuel the success of these and many other related endeavors through giving to PACT. The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center is the proud title sponsor of Sow the Seeds for GGC 2021.

To underscore why PACT sees the development of urban gardens as a perfect fit with its mission -- which is to create a healthy, financially and environmentally sustainable community where residents have access to safe and affordable housing, quality healthcare and education, and employment opportunities on the Near East Side -- two experts will share insights from research in the health and social sciences that lay the foundations for this work. Dr. Joshua Joseph, an assistant professor of medicine in the endocrinology, diabetes and metabolism division at OSU Wexner Medical Center, will speak to the ways community-based practitioners can use gardens for programming that addresses health disparities and Dr. Kierra Barnett, a post-doctoral researcher with Ohio State's Kirwan Institute, will deliver a keynote that illuminates how health disparities along community lines came to be in the first place.

Those who register for the event will learn even more about GGC and PACT as well as about additional ways to get involved. Registration is donation-based and accessible via sowtheseeds2021.eventbrite.com.
