The Centennial highlights key moments in our history in the struggle for women's rights, and how their efforts helped to pass the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution on August 18, 1920 granting women the right to vote.

The theme of the Brockton Library's Kick-Off event on January 29th will focus on the importance of voting and the fact that in some elections one vote can make a difference in who gets elected.  The event will include brief remarks by newly-elected Brockton Mayor Robert Sullivan, local historian and professor Willie Wilson, Jr., the Executive Director of Mass Vote Cheryl Crawford, and former Brockton Mayor Linda Balzotti who won her first election by 8 votes and lost in a re-election bid four year later by 55 votes.

The event will feature a review of the Brockton Library's upcoming Suffrage Centennial events, a video showcase of photos from the early days of the Suffrage Movement, an exhibit of books for loan by the Library and the movie "Perfect 36: When Women Won the Right to Vote." which  chronicles the dramatic vote in Nashville to ratify the 19th amendment, as anti-and pro-suffragist each fought for their vision of a socially evolving United States." Light refreshments will be available.

The event is free, but we ask all attendees to please register to ensure we have adequate seating and refreshments. For more information or questions, please contact Pat at: [email protected].

This series is made possible with funding by the Barbara Lee Foundation and Mass Humanities.
