Child prodigies are both fascinating and enigmatic. How is it that they manage such amazing feats of intellect or artistry at such a young age? How are they different from those who are not quite so prodigious? The truth is that most prodigies fade into obscurity as adults and live average lives. But for those whose careers and fame continue to grow into adulthood, a legacy is left behind.
With their latest program, "Prodigious", Quartett Giocosa will explore the childhood experiences of three of classical music's most famous child prodigies; Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Felix Mendelssohn and Samuel Barber. All three had distinctly different upbringings, with the prodigious nature of each child being managed in various ways, ranging from exploitation of their talents to the hope that music would be abandoned in favor of a more appropriate pastime, such as football. These performances will be a fascinating look into the upbringing of three child geniuses and how their unusual abilities affected the musical output of their adult lives. On the program is Mozart's String Quartet #14 (Spring), Mendelssohn's Quartet Op. 44 #1, and the famous Adagio from Barber's Quartet Op. 11. These programs are supported in part by grants from the Mid-Cape and Wellfleet Cultural Councils, local agencies which are supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency.
